Johannes helped get the first Batumi Raptor Count off the ground as a co-founder, co-coordinating the inaugural 2008 season. He was part of the team for fourteen years, from 2008 to 2022, serving on the board, including a spell as president, and coordinating BRC's work on illegal raptor hunting, which was also the subject of his own research.

NEW BRC Publication in Sandgrouse
Our study on hunters' habits and motivations for shooting raptors in the Batumi bottleneck has been published in Sandgrouse, the journal of the Ornithological Society of the Middle East and the Caucasus (OSME). Congratulations to Anna Sandor, Johannes Jansen and Wouter Vansteelant!

End of BRC autumn count 2013
BRC's monitoring of migrating raptors autumn 2013 is over! Yesterday, the 16th of October, was the final day of our monitoring program. In total, from both count stations together 1.229.199 raptors were counted this fall.

Crested or Oriental Honey Buzzard and hybrids
On our first pilot count in 2007, which lead to BRC's birth, the first Crested Honey-buzzard (also referred to as Oriental Honey-buzzard, Pernis ptilorhynchus orientalis) was recorded on migration over Batumi.

BRC on Vroege Vogels
During the festival, the Dutch journalist Roel Pauw visited our project. He recorded a compilation of the diverse aspects of BRC and this was broadcasted last Sunday on the Dutch radio-station Vara for the program 'Vroege Vogels'.

Count kicked off today
Today the first volunteers, assisted by our coordinators, started the autumn 2012 count. Just a few hours in, they had already reported the season's first juvenile Pallid Harrier, on a very rainy day!
