  • be able to come for at least twelve days,
  • speak at least good basic English,
  • be able to focus on counting migrants in a standardized manner and are personally motivated to follow protocol,
  • be able to endure a variety of weather conditions,
  • be able to manage a daily walk (30 min.) over rather rough and steep terrain,

Practical information

BRC will provide the following arrangements for counters:

  • Accommodation: guesthouses with several rooms shared by 2 - 4 people. Hot showers, toilets, washing machine are available and shared responsibly.  All volunteer accommodation is close to each other, and within walking distance of count station 1, the office and the green bar. Wireless internet is available in some houses and around the office, although irregular and often slow.
  • Delicious food provided by our host families: breakfast & lunch are prepared daily to be consumed on the counting stations and a hot dinner will be waiting for you at the end of the day.
  • Transportation: going to the stations and coming back is done on foot (station 1) or with regular BRC drivers in a minibus (station 2).
  • Days off: during your time you will have the opportunity to get some free time. depending on conditions and availability, coordinators can grant you for every 5 days of counting one day to explore other areas or rest.
  • Introduction and training: volunteers will receive a protocol, an introduction presentation and some time on the spot to get used to the working environment. Some evenings, coordinators will give training on groups of raptors that are difficult to identify, or other aspects of the project will be discussed.
  • Pleasant atmosphere: we will make sure the atmosphere is at it's best, and everyone can enjoy their time in Batumi. Good comfort for everyone is important, as well as a quiet and relaxed environment to work and rest in. During the season, volunteers and visitors can have a drink in the village "Green Bar". Such facilities will not be available in Turkey.
  • A contribution of 38 GEL (about 15€) per person per day will be asked to help us cover the expenses for counters. For long term volunteers, we are currently in process of fund raising to have more attractive fees.

You can indicate the preferred duration and timing of your volunteering in the application form.

Extended count on Turkish site!

In 2016 we give it a try and do simultaneous counting of raptors in Batumi and behind the bottleneck on the Turkish site. This gives clarity about how the migration flow splits up after Batumi and how many birds take the sea route or the river route.

Our Turkish colleagues came up with this idea and we are more than interested to support this initiative. The Turkish counting sites are set up at Arhavi on the Isina hill for the entire counting period. Another team will be based at Borcka in the Coruh river valley.

The technicalities and protocol of the counting are based on the Batumi protocol and entirely coordinated by our Turkish colleagues. In Arhavi, we will provide home stay accommodation at a 20 mins walk (uphill) from the counting spot. Details coming soon - they will be similar to the provisions in Batumi.

If you are interested in participating in this pilot count in Turkey, or would like to divide your time between Batumi and Turkey, you can indicate this in the application form.
