In September 2012 the Department of Tourism and Resorts of Ajara, under the guidance of Mr. Mamuka Berdzenishvili, has constructed the first platform for raptor observation in the bottleneck of Batumi, assisted and advised by BRC.
The platform is build on a very nice rock giving a beautiful 360° view on the scenery of the Lesser Caucasus and the coast of the Black Sea. Raptors use this part of the ridge to gain in height through thermal convections. Observers are very close to the raptors and have good chances to shoot good photographs.
Below the rock is a wooden building giving shelter of rain and sun. A toilet and drinking water from the natural spring is available year-round. The platform is situated in the village of Shuamta (12 km distance to Batumi) on a ridge in the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus in 7 km distance to the coast. The BRC counting station no. 2 is on the same ridge where you can always get in contact with experienced ornithologist.
The Department of Tourism has provided signs to the platform at each crossing from the main road along the coast. When you follow the signs be aware of using an appropriate vehicle for Georgian and mountainous roads. The last part of the route is a steep walking trail with stairs and rails where a small wooden door welcomes you to the ridge.
Many thanks to the Department of Tourism and Resorts of Ajara and their workers for this realisation!
